Hillside

Date

2023 - 2026

Project type

Outbuilding

Location

Malvern Hills National Landscape

Hillside is a new ancillary building set into the steep terrain of the Malvern Hills National Landscape, providing garage, workshop, and home office accommodation for the main residence that sits above. Meraki Architecture was appointed following the client's previous architect, tasked with redesigning the scheme and navigating a challenging planning process to delivery.

The project demonstrates that sensitive, well-argued design can succeed even in the most protected landscapes - and in the face of significant local opposition.

The building is organised over two levels, following the fall of the land. The structure supports a dual-pitch roof clad in corrugated metal sheeting, while walls combine corrugated metal profile sheeting and vertical timber boarding - materials chosen for their robustness, low maintenance, and sympathetic appearance within the designated area.

Hillside is a case study in persistence and design quality. Through careful redesign, robust planning justification, and close dialogue with the local authority, Meraki Architecture secured consent for a building that meets the client's practical needs while respecting the exceptional character of the Malvern Hills National Landscape.
