Buzzard Hill

Project type

Annexe Accommodation

Date

2020 - 2023

Location

Herefordshire

This 1½-storey annexe in rural Herefordshire reimagines a previously consented garage and workshop, retaining the original foundations while introducing a self-contained living space ancillary to the main cottage. The barn-inspired form features a steeply pitched slate roof with rooflights, weathered timber cladding above a local stone plinth, and an attached lean-to car port - a material palette that responds sensitively to the surrounding agricultural landscape.

The accommodation inverts typical domestic arrangements: a ground-floor bedroom with dressing and an ensuite, with an open-plan kitchen, living and dining area. Further ensuite accommodation and storage is located at first-floor level, accessed via an external timber staircase and balcony. This configuration maximises the elevated position, framing panoramic views across the rolling Herefordshire countryside.

An air-source heat pump provides low-carbon heating and hot water, complementing the well-insulated timber-frame construction. The design demonstrates how a constrained site and existing consent can be thoughtfully adapted to create characterful, energy-efficient accommodation that sits comfortably within its rural setting.
